Stop, look, and listen...for an approaching depot???
Author: erie833

Today was moving day for the historic original Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad Kent, Ohio depot. It was/and will be located off W. Main Street. It was a very interesting process, kind of a step by step thing. Even though it doesn't look like a long move, just across the tracks and west a little, Stein House Movers did a great job. It wasn't the kind of job you wanted to "rush through". Here are a few views of the process this morning :

Imagine pulling up to a RR crossing, looking for an approaching train, and seeing a station coming at you instead :)

Church bus did the mandatory stop, open door, etc, then got the ok to go.

Nothing like moving a building to attract a crowd.

I believe this was built in 1881, and there have been some minor additions to the original structure.

Looking north on the W&LE Cleveland Sub.

Station was lifted and rolled over to the tracks.

Once it was over the rails the wheel sets were turned to move it ahead. Note wheel sets, one already turned to move ahead...

...and turning the second set.

A little help from a Deere.

Turns out the last train I would photograph passing it in it's original location was that passenger special from Solon to Kent a few weeks ago with CCRL power.

Very impressive. They make it look simple but the sweat and horsepower proves otherwise.

Thanks again for the HU, great series and at least Nancy and I got to see the tale end or the final "temporary"
resting place till the new foundation is built trackside.

Really neat, Roger! Didn't realize this move was imminent.

What is the future plan for the depot? Will it remain trackside?

I love your third picture showing the dog laying in the street and watching the whole operation. Just looks like he is saying to himself (or herself) "Ho Hum". Very nice and thank you.

Caught me by surprise too, saw an early morning update and hustled up there.
Sean, its new home will be near the tracks although not right next to them like it was- and on the opposite side of course. Word is a restoration to as close an original look as possible. I'm guessing it will be able to be worked in a photo.

Thanks for the additional info Roger. Realistically, seeing ABC or WLE running at night there is a rarity, but anytime you can get a nice railroad-themed backdrop for a photo, day or night, it is a good thing.
