Trinity Rail: 45,000 car orders backlog!
Author: Lackawanna484

Trinity Rail, a leading builder of railroad tank cars, covered hoppers, etc announced today that it received orders for 9,880 new rail cars in the second quarter, resulting in a backlog of more than 45,000 rail cars yet to be built.

Trinity, Greenbrier, and American Rail Car are leading builders of CPC-1232 compliant oil tank cars. The firms also have extensive lease fleets of cars.

>>In the second quarter of 2014, the [Trinity] Rail Group reported record revenues of $895.6 million and a record operating profit of $176.0 million, resulting in increases compared to the second quarter of 2013 of 34% and 63%, respectively. The Rail Group shipped 7,160 railcars and received orders for 9,880 railcars during the second quarter. The Rail Group backlog increased to a record $5.5 billion at June 30, 2014, representing a record 45,350 railcars, compared to a backlog of $5.2 billion as of March 31, 2014, representing 42,630 railcars. <<

Trinity and Greenbrier have announced plans to open mothballed shops, enter into joint ventures, etc to resolve this considerable backlog of new orders

Time to sell railroad stocks. The economy is getting near the top of the cycle.

That's a lot of good American jobs.

Yes, and they ripple through the system. People producing steel for the cars, and for the rigging, wheel assemblies, all the gauges, etc. Shipping the parts to the assembly plants, etc.

I didn't mention National Steel, which is another rail car producer. They've received a bundle of oil car orders, too. Good Canadian jobs in Hamilton, etc.

As long as they stay made in the USA, Ken

There had been a post about off-shore built railcars, not sure how that's working out.

Seems like a good market for local jobs.

Indeed they do ripple though the economy. Amsted Rail (formerly American Steel Foundries, or ASF) in Granite City, Illinois near St. Louis is buzzing building all of those trucks for those cars. I was by there on a Sunday afternoon recently, and the employee parking lot was chock full.

I may have mentioned overseas in another thread.

Greenbrier owns car manufacturers in Poland and (I believe) has an interest in a Korean manufacturer. So far, there's been no indication they intend to ship any work.

But, if the feds (Canadian and US) decide to accelerate the phase out of old cars, who knows what could happen.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this happened.

Any word on what is being built at the facility in Alabama that Navistar trucks picked up for a song? (Given how Navistar is doing, needing that capacity may be viewed as wishful thinking though!)

Navistar wisely subleased the freight car construction line to Freight Car America who is now building freight cars there.

The large order of coal hoppers for Colombia was built there, wasn't it?

Agreed, that is a wise move.
