Eastern Railroad Discussion > Amtrak's Newest Meets Operation Lifesaver on the NECDate: 07/30/14 15:28 Amtrak's Newest Meets Operation Lifesaver on the NEC Author: cr2581 The newest ACS-64 #612 assigned to train 127 this evening blew by the NS local working at GRUNDY (Bristol, PA) with an Operation Lifesaver GP38 in the lead. The ACS-64 population is growing rapidly as 607 and 609 made their first revenue run yesterday. The number of active HHP-8's continues to dwindle so get you last shots while you still can ....

I wonder if Amtrak will ever install the shroud for the roof line? The publicity pictures had them, but none of the Sprinters I've seen have them installed. Just a row of bolts on either side. Are any / many running east of New York toward Boston? Thanks (That's a really nice picture. The texture of the visible wood, the colors of the OLS unit, lots to like) Date: 07/30/14 19:37 Re: Amtrak's Newest Meets Operation Lifesaver on the NE Author: cr2581 By my count, there are eleven available for revenue service as of now (600, 601, 602, 603, 604, 605, 606, 607, 609, 611, and 612). 614 has been accepted and was planned for a run today but got scrubbed last minute. 613 completed its test run and should be accepted soon. I do not know what the current status of 608 and 610 is. Revenue trips to Boston should start any day now ....

So - is there a shroud in the Sprinter's future? Unlikely, I suppose. /Mitch BTW - When was that image taken? It was sunny Wednesday where I was - and I had heard it's always sunny where you are ; ) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/31/14 22:33 by Mgoldman. Having Boston in the picture should expand the use of these units considerably. And reduce the probability of seeing HHP-8 or AEM-7 units Date: 07/31/14 05:56 Re: Amtrak's Newest Meets Operation Lifesaver on the NE Author: bluesboyst Shroud would be nice, but I want reliability first which this loco will give.
Date: 07/31/14 08:09 Re: Amtrak's Newest Meets Operation Lifesaver on the NE Author: Phil Also good to see the CPL signals.. They may not be classic PRR PLs but they are a lot better than those Safetran traffic lights..

Shrouding would not affect reliability - it's not one or the other. In fact - if they are really reliable, there would be no reason not to shroud them, no? Unless weight is an issue... or cost. /Mitch PS - Congrats on IOTD! Maybe I need to post more of the mostly cloudy shots that I try to weed out, lol.
