The Pere Marquette-era cantilever signal that protected the Pleasant St. Plant in Grand Rapids MI was taken out of service today and removed by CSX to make way for improvements in signaling. It was the only such signal in west Michigan on the PM, and there was a nicely edited video of the process of it going dark and coming down was videoed and uploaded to YouTube by the author. Search "ep 386 death and removal Godfrey st signal" and you should be able to find it. It's 20 min long, condensed nicely. time marches on..

Thanks for the effort to document this. It is sad that infrastructure of the past PM, or any road, has to go, but as you said, "time marches on".

And not too far away, are the C&O cantilevered signals on the Flint Belt Railway.

Also, just north of Flint there are some PM signals left on the CTC. This section of CTC has some notoriety and it my be that it was one of the first such installations in America. It was noted that those signals were being changed near Birch Run.

has to meet updated FRA safety standards for climbing and perhaps PTC software ... cheaper to just change out the whole cantilever as much as it pains me to say that
