NC&StL Models
Author: drburr

I'm starting an HO layout of the NC&StL Chattanooga Division....anyone have any info, esp. about models in addition to the Bachmann consol? Also need plans of stations, track layouts, etc. I'm modelling 1950 time frame.

Thanks, Peter

If you don't have them, I recommend getting Charles Castner's book and the recent reprint of the Richard Prince book.

Both books are available through the L&N society. The prices are greatly discounted for members, i.e. the savings would essentially cover your membership! Of course, even without the savings the society is a good deal.

Are you in the Chattanooga area?

If you have $1000-1250, you should invest in an HO scale Overland Models brass Yellow Jacket 4-8-4. These are probably the first NC&StL steam engines ever modeled accurately in HO scale. They are beauties, and are absolutely correct and factory painted. You will not lose your money on them as you would on your 401k.

One other model comes to mind also. The Ambroid outside-braced wood caboose is an NC&StL prototype. These can be found easily at shows and ebay for $20-30; they are worth it. Highly detailed, very distinctive, accurate, and fun to build. Northeastern and Gloor Craft made have sold this same kit over the years also.

Finally, you should buy the NC&StL book by Richard Prince, recently reprinted by Indiana University Press for about $50, well worth it. Tons of steam era photos.

I've seen a couple of Dixies for sale used already. You could put the word out on the L&N/NC&StL list if you want one.

There are some bargains in used brass. These things are like new cars; they are much cheaper once they've been run.

The one I saw for sale was abou $700 - maybe a bit more - at a Nashville train show.
