What irks me about magazine stories....
Author: NYC6001

....is one simple thing. Often, the story refers to geographical places,(train XYZ runs from point a to point Q) but they aren't labeled on the accompanying map. Or, they are hard to spot.

Please, Trains Mag editors, make sure we can find the places the story cites easily on the accompanying graphics.

I guess I haven't noticed that to be a problem. Out of curiosity, do you have any specific examples?

Its often a problem in published magazines. Mention of various towns or villages along the way and no reference on otherwise excellant maps.
Then again I'm Gonut

A lot of times problems like this involve railroad points; junctions, sidings and whatnot. Some DeLorme maps are pretty good at showing stuff like this, but the best bet is an SPV or Sonrisa atlas for the area that you are interested in

That's one huge advantage to Kimdle etc e-books. Tap a word and you get a definition, or a map, etc.

Most do show you the end points of a particular route, many show important locations but none will give specifics for every single photo location. In this day and age of instant info online, with the time it took to write the post, one can invest minimal effort to bring up a regional map. Now if there is a specific article that lacks any real geographic info, please do write the editor.

That's one thing Railpace magazine does exceptionally well in their TrainChaser features. Every photo is numbered, and cross indexed to a map on a nearby page. So, picture 7 shows up as diamond 7 on the article's map.

They generally mention the actual location of a picture (Benjamin Avenue crossing) and often mention whether it's a morning or evening etc picture

A whole lot better in magazines than what a lot of people do here. They give a CP or maybe a road crossing name. Lucky if you get a state in many post.

x2

I end up using my PC and a map program to "follow" along with many of their articles.
I ended up using MAPS to follow the Orient Line (current Mag) to the Mexico border and it was pretty helpful.
