They get hit because they drive in front of a train. Simple.

Being drunk sometimes has it's advantages, unfortunately. It doesn't clear out the gene pool, though.

And they don't read the rail crossing signs anymore than they run a red light and speed. Sad.

I saw this thread too late to see 20/20. I searched around the
web to try and find some useful information. I found it on you
tube. It is an indepth explanation of the physics behind safety
at a railroad crossing. The findings can also be applied anywhere
tracks suddenly appear beneath you. Simply search for

How to avoid being hit by a train - Larry the Cable Guy

You might have to review it a couple times. He covers a lot of
information in 22 seconds.

That train foamer they interviewed has a lot of videos on youtube. Just look up tropicana juice trains and you will find his funny movies

I just saw the report by Debra Roberts.

Not enough attention was devoted to inattentive drivers. A tremendous percentage of train-vehicle collisions occur after the train is already fouling the crossing. Stop trying to text and drive at the same time.

The disoriented woman who had to be rescued by the cop should have her license revoked. If she was so disoriented that she started driving down the railroad right-of-way, on the tracks, she probably shouldn't be driving. Period.

The situation where the railroad installed gates at a crossing after the death of the child of the complaining parents is not unique.

Cities frequently compile statistics of the number of injuries or fatalities at an intersection before an upgrade from a stop sign to traffic signals takes place.

There's a certain "death factor" before action is taken, otherwise, EVERY intersection would have traffic signals instead of stop signs.
