G&U gets STB OK to build Propane Transload Facility
Author: JPB

Grafton and Upton continues to develop business in eastern MA. It's not easy resuscitating a once moribund RR in the greater Boston/Worcester area.

STB Decision summary:

DECISION FOUND THAT FEDERAL LAW PREEMPTS STATE AND LOCAL PRECLEARANCE REGULATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS THAT WOULD PROHIBIT OR UNREASONABLY INTERFERE WITH THE GRAFTON & UPTON RAILROAD COMPANY'S CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF A LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS TRANSLOAD FACILITY IN GRAFTON, MASS.

Good news indeed. This will give the line an important source of revenue. And if the traffic to Hopedale ever increases that would be wonderful as well. When I grew up in Hopedale there were always 30-40 cars in the yards primarily for the Draper Corporation looms.

The LPG delivery and natural pipelines are very important to New England's economic growth. Last year the extremely limited pipe supply and "polar vortex" meant some of the highest natural gas prices in decades, even as Marcellus shale gas was selling for a steep discount 300 miles west.
