NS buys remaining CSX SD80MACs
Author: judahrice

Hello all! s per Altoona Works.com' Facebook page. This is what they said:

>NS will acquire the 12 CSX SD80MACs.
>They will be numbered 7217-7228.
>CSX got 13 of the 30 in the Conrail split, but one was scrapped due to major damage from a derailment.

This will re-unite all 29 surviving SD80MACs! Great news for the rail fan community!

I wonder what NS will purchase next??? Hmmm

I also wonder if they will remove the class lights (bug eyes for con rail people), like they did with theirs?

One of my homies texted me about the NS purchase of SD90/43MACs. Plus he texted me that NS is going to get NREX ex BNSF SD45-2Bs and the fleet of BNSF GP60Bs. We'll have to wait and see if the GP60B and SD45-2B purchase is true..

Fun to look back at all the naysayers to this move when this was first mentioned on TO a few months ago. Egg on quite a few faces...

The thread that caused the fuss several months ago was the claim that NS was going to trade SD40-2's to CSX in return for getting CSX's 80 MACs....

The SD90-43MAC to NS thread from a week or two ago with the numbering sequence allowing for additional 80MACs to be added to the NS roster was a big clue that something was indeed in the works..Dave W

At time and not sure if it still on the table CSX was to get the former CR SD40 rebuilds.

SD-80 macs ZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sorry. I guess if u grew up with that stuff, it's exciting.

Most interesting thing on the NS are the GP38 and SD40 HH's. (I left out the -2 cause i don't care)

Its been OFFICIAL for a few weeks now. BUT From what I was told, "The Lease" from CSX to a railroad who they have a contract with, has to be up before NS will get the 80MACS, NS needs the remaining MACS to fill the gap from 7217 to the # series the Ex UP's that are SD90Macs rebuilt.... Until they are on the move there is not really any set thing for the CSX engines to come to Altoona or any shop NS wants them sent to.
AND I also heard that CSX is getting 2 engines (SD40-2's) for each of their MAC's, makes sense.

Yeah, BUT this rumor has come up at least once a year since I started railfanning in 2004-ish. Never happened, so a little skepticism is to be expected. And as others have said , nothing on Facebook can be considered official until they turn up on the property.

No egg on any faces. The rumor of the CSX SD80MAC's going to NS has popped up several times per year here ever since the Conrail breakup. The first reliable source to report the current transaction was Eastern Railroad News back on September 1.

It's funny, for a genre that is full of what is effectively nerds (yes, we're nerds) the railfan community has a bad habit of talking down to itself.

Good bye and good ridance to the SD80 MACs. I would rather see SD40-2's anyhow. GRS

Now I"ll Believe THAT when I see it (on Trainorders).

I think it's a pity. SD80MACs look good in CSX colors, as do SD70s.

Good riddance to the 80macs, heck throw in the sd70aces for free.

The symbol formerly known as Q122 is out.
