Congestion east of Elkhart
Author: AndyBrown

Mrs. Brown and my mom and I rode Amtrak's Capitol Limited from Washington to Chicago Sat/Sun. All the stories about delays on the NS were true! We left Cleveland on time but were something like 5hrs/45mins late into Chicago. I didn't get shots of all the meets but did get a few. Sun and a dirty rear window weren't doing me any favors, alas, but I had fun since I wasn't too concerned about our connection to #5.

1. Our train about 2 hrs late in Toldeo.

2. Meet at Swanton OH.

3. We had a few of these 3 way meets at sidings.

4&5. Not sure if these were dead trains or were just waiting for us to get out of the way.

6. We crossed over to get out of this BN guy's way.

7. Looks like a new crossover is going in here.

8. We sat east of Elkhart for a good half hour waiting for 3 eastbounds.

9. Finally moving up toward the depot. Looks like they're going to extend the yard lead out farther east.

10. This WB was waiting too.

11. Pulling into the depot this EB cleared.

12. With another one right behind! And railfans on the platform.

For the uninitiated, the second to last shot shows the Kalamazoo branch diverging at the curve just east of the depot in Elkhart. "Tower B" was on the right in the trees, behind that shed you see.

CP 412 - It is being rebuilt as a full three track crossover (two tracks main line, one track Marion Branch east of CP 412). West of CP 412 the Dunlap siding (from CP 415 to CP 421) is being extended.

CP 415 is you were on track 2. Since you were on track one your train was at an intermediate.

CP 415 is the split to the Dunlap Siding (third track). 415 will be gone in a couple of months. (A new three track crossover will be built at 417 ... just east of the candelabra intermediate signals - which will retire.)

11 may have come off of the "Coach Track" ... a third track south of the two main lines.

Thanks for sharing ... seeing CP 412 from a unique perspective!

+1

I'm learning a lot about how the railroad works today.
