Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS west of ElkhartDate: 09/22/14 07:11 NS west of Elkhart Author: AndyBrown Following my previous thread:
http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,3528590 There weren't as many freights west of Elkhart but still plenty of delays. 1. I was disappointed this shot wasn't better focused because I love that signal! West end of Elkhart yard. 2. West of LaPorte, IN. 3. This was another 3 train meet in the background. Nice signal bridge.
11. I was happy to catch the bottle train at one of the steel mills. 12. And this plant switcher. Date: 09/22/14 07:17 Re: NS west of Elkhart Author: AndyBrown Date: 09/22/14 07:19 Re: NS west of Elkhart Author: AndyBrown 16-18. Another source of delay was single tracking on the Calumet River lift bridge.

We made the connection to #5 with about 15 minutes to spare. Thanks for looking! Andy Date: 09/22/14 07:46 Re: NS west of Elkhart Author: WrongMain Pretty neat stuff!
Date: 09/22/14 08:24 Re: NS west of Elkhart Author: ERAD I like it!

The bridge in pictures 16-18 is what the PRR referred to as "River Branch", which spans the Calumet River. The interlocking protecting the bridge is CP 509. "South Branch" is the bridge just south of C.U.S over the South Branch of the Chicago River. While on the subject of bridges, the ones in picture 13 are over the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal. The interlocking is "Hick", which in NYC and PC days was called "HC". The CSX train is probably from the BRC Connection at CP 509 and headed towards CP 501 which is picture 10. The connection to the Garrett Sub is off to the right. The BRC job looks like one of the "South Chicago Jobs" taking headroom towards "The District" to put its train away in Commercial Ave. Yard. That would not be a very good thing if the DS for got that the rail was not in and switch the train over.

Don't worry, that crossover and those signals are probably not even on the DS's display yet. The switches are wedged, spiked, secured in the normal position. Before the dispatcher will be given control of the switches the Signal Dept. will do an immense amount of testing to ensure that the signals display correct aspects over the switches and reflect block occupancy as well as traffic locking to the next interlocking. All that testing will require a lot of time which will mean a substantial delay to traffic for a few days during work windows. Date: 09/22/14 19:11 Re: NS west of Elkhart Author: AndyBrown Thanks everyone for the kind remarks and Englewood for the additional information. I should've known that about the bridge name. I corrected the caption.
