Now the evening dawn is calling and all the hills are burning red And before the night comes falling Clouds are lined with golden thread" This photo would be the last of many taken during an all day drive across Nebraska on Rt2 following the busy BNSF Sand Hills Sub. It is one of my most favorite railfan roads. The words to a Mark Knopfler song, "Piper to the End", kept going through my head after I took this photo. The hills were indeed burning red, and a strong wind was blowing the heated exhaust of the train over me, mixing the smells of the Sand Hills evening air with the fragrance of a railroad at work. The high thin clouds took on a golden hue for the last few moments of the day....indeed a day to die for in my book.
