Eastern Railroad Discussion > The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10ADate: 10/19/14 19:08 The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10A Author: NS62590 NS acquiring old SD60Ms and SD75Ms from BNSF, they're one step closer to becoming "new" today! 10A from Conway brought 7 more of these units into Altoona this afternoon for rebuilding / repainting. I managed to catch the train three times: in Lilly, Cresson, and finally from 17th Street in Altoona. I'm posting my full consist shots and video from Altoona first, then the roster shots from the first two locations.
1) Full consist of Sunday's 10A in Altoona, PA (if you look closely, you can still see the wreckage being cleaned up from the derailment still on the back left of the pic) 2) Going away shot of 10A 3) Video from 17th Street You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Date: 10/20/14 06:21 Re: The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10A Author: dcmkris Nice photos it is amazing the direction NS is going compared to all the others. Or maybe this is the end around for a NS - BNSF merger. You know SPSF without the embarrassment should it not be approved. (For those who can't see thru it, that is very thick sarcasm!)
Anyway's it got me to thinking how many second hand units has NS picked up over the past two years? Does anyone know how much they have spent on this buying spree? I personally think this is very smart business and NS really should be commended, for trying to positioning themselves not to be in a huge power shortage should the emissions business get really messy next year with the new tier 4 locomotives set to be built. Hopefully the crews get something good out of it too Date: 10/20/14 19:12 Re: The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10A Author: OCtrainguy I like the color on both the trees and the engines in your photos. Real sweet catch, thanks for sharing the photos. I liked that BN paint scheme on the SD60Ms.
Date: 10/20/14 20:47 Re: The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10A Author: pt199 Is the only identifying difference between the SD60 and SD75 the 3 piece windshield?
Is there some other way to tell the two apart? Date: 10/20/14 21:20 Re: The "new" old SD60Ms and SD75Ms on today's 10A Author: SD45-2 pt199 Wrote:

(Please do correct me if I'm wrong...) The SD60M is shorter than a SD75M. The SD60M rides on HTC trucks, while the SD75M rides on Early HTCR trucks. SD60M has one 60-Series Blower on the Fireman's Side, while the SD75M has two SD70M-style blowers on both sides... Bigger grills, more doors, etc... The Later SD60Ms came with two-piece windshields. (Anyone know why they changed it?) Oh by the way, nice shots! I'll be interesting to see what NS does with the SD75Ms... Parker Boots Metairie, LA Edited 2 time(s). It's sad to see these engines no longer on BNSF trains, but it's better than having them scrapped.

From what I understand, the 3 piece SD60M window cab was not ideal for glare inside due to the vertical windows and/or positioning. The more traditional (aka, F45/FP45) type 2 piece window was a better option. Although the vertical discussion seems to be odd since SD70M-2 and 70ACe's have vertical windows. So I'm thinking the placement of the 3 piece vs. 2 piece is more of the issue, but railroaders that run them I'm sure have better feedback. Mike ONeill Parker, CO |
