Solar Eclipse today
Author: howeld

There is a partial solar eclipse tonight as sun sets. Your mission if you choose to accept it is to get a photo of the eclipse and a train.

Good luck

Will be tough seeing it in the Hudson Valley today with a stubborn low pressure system meandering off the coast unless clouds thin out in time....Dave W

We've got a true (and rare for this time of year) sunny day in NW Ohio, although there's enough grub on the western horizon that I'm not sure how much sun we'll be able to see at ~17:40 ET. On the other hand, if we can see it, there should be enough atmosphere between my eyes and the sun at that hour that I can look at it (and photograph it) without worrying about burning anything out.

Thanks for the heads up! (Where were you for DINA??, lol)

Curiosity:
DO

• Use a solar filter to protect your DSLR camera sensor

Does anyone do this???
Is it really even necessary?
My camera still works and I can still see....

Sun got into the cloud horizon before I or my camera could distinguish any eclipse features. I shot it at 1/8000, f32.

Right about 6pm i stared at sun with sunglasses and some clouds helping and could just see a bit of a indent on right side then soon it was lost to the clouds. Im in Mt Victory, OH.

The sun looked like a cookie with a bite missing here in PA. I will post a couple pics later

Here's what it looked like through the trees from my house (I wanted to get a better vantage point but I was busy herding rugrats)

For more details on this concept, Google the Sesame Street song "If the moon were a cookie" performed by the cookie monster. My boys loved it.

Relevant lyrics (to teh best of my recollection):

IF moon were a cookie
It wouldn't be fine
Because if I ate it, then it wouldn't shine
I'd go to the window and look up at night
But no little moonbeams would give me their light
So I hate to say it but it's clear to me
It's lucky the moon is not a cookie

Actually, I think it looks great looking through the trees!
