Work is progressing smoothly on the extension of a third track between the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Crossroads terminal and Fredericksburg, VA, a few miles to the north. These aerials were shot this morning.


1&2. A southbound CSX manifest passes the construction of a retaining wall that will secure the fill needed for the third track.

3. Fredericksburg locals are perfectly aligned while waiting for their next assignments at the wye just south of downtown Fredericksburg.

4. Clearing has begun for the new passenger terminal at Crossroads. US 17 can be seen in the upper right.

Is that wye from steam engine days?

Good question on the wye. Don't know the answer, but here's where it is. Very short tail. http://goo.gl/maps/9emjc

South of Fredericksburg, here's where the 3rd track is being installed, with the culvert allowing Massaponax Creek to pass beneath the railroad: http://goo.gl/maps/MTMXY If you follow the railroad north from that location, you can see that there's an existing 3rd track, but it's only been an industrial spur. It goes north for about a mile or two to Hamilton interlocking shown here http://goo.gl/maps/SLxpv where it becomes a 3rd main track north through Fredericksburg yard to FB Interlocking, just south of Fredericksburg station. From what I've read, CSX is upgrading the industrial track from Hamilton south to the intersection of Benchmark Road and Mine Rd, and it's being extended as a new 3rd track from the Mine Rd crossing to Crossroads Interlocking just north of Crossroads Yard at the new Spotsylvania station.

VRE Crossroads Yard is at the bottom of the aerial map. Cinder's photo must have been taken on a weekday, since it looks like the yard is empty except for spares, with all of the trains on the line or being stored mid-day in Washington.
