OHCR, Z&W, and a drawbridge
Author: gborgwald

1. OCHR 4092 and 4093, Zanesville, OH, 12-19-14.

2. A drawbridge next to the famous Y Bridge, Zanesville, OH, 12-19-14.

3. From what I can find, this Davenport belongs to the Zanesville & Western. I don't know its model number/tonnage. Photographed in East Fultonham, OH, 12-19-14.

I'm not sure. I never heard a symbol.

How often is that train running to Cambridge nowadays? That's on that's been on my list for a while now.

I've never been to that part of Ohio but appreciate the excellent and interesting photos. Any idea when that cool little drawbridge last moved?

ZVL1 is called for daily - Mon-Fri. Morning east to Cambridge. It looks like with the upswing in traffic on the line, they have been working every day. However, there may be times when they only go as far as Eastpointe or Norwich.

ZVL2 is the evening local that services Tunnel Hill landfill. It uses the same power as ZVL1.

Zanesville can get busy at times. You can also catch the NZT Newark-Zanesville turn which hits town around 8pm plus two coal shuttle trains- BOT and RHT heading both directions at various times during the day.

If you go to Cambridge to see the operation be sure to go south to Byesville where the tourist line has their center-cab and a couple cars parked in a nicely restored depot area.

Also be sure to go over to the Cambridge Airport and catch an F-80 mounted on a pedestal at the field.

Thanks for the additional info on this.

What routes do the ZVL1 and 2 take? Any idea what divisions/timetables of the former railroads those lines would be on?

ZVL1 works east from Zanesville on the ex B&O Central Ohio Subdivision. This line originally ran east to Benwood Yard at Wheeling WV. It now ends just east of Cambridge and is called Ohio Central's Cambridge Subdivision. At Cambridge, the OC uses a remnant of the ex PRR line to Marietta as their Byesville Branch.

ZVL2 works south from Zanesville on the ex PRR Morrow Secondary. This line originally ran from Trinway to just outside Cincinnati. It now ends in New Lexington with a connection to the NS West Virginia Secondary. At Rehobeth just east of New Lexington, there is a coal mine- loadout and a huge C&D landfill. The RHT coal train loads here 3-4 times per week. The ZVL2 delivers about 200 cars per week to the landfill.

Ohio Central has trackage rights on the NS from New Lexington to a mine just south of Corning Ohio. The BOT (Burr Oak Turn) loads here five days per week.

Both the BOT and the RHT go through Zanesville and then north up the Ohio Central Subdivision - ex Wheeling and Lake Erie and the Pan Subdivision- ex PRR Panhandle to get to the Conesville AEP power plant.

Train NZT brings all cars for Tunnel Hill, Zanesville and Cambridge in from Newark and takes returning cars back. They also work local industries in the Zanesville area. As soon as NZTarrive in Zanesville Yard, the ZVL2 ties on to the rear of the train and the Tunnel Hill cars are cut off and immediately taken south.
