I feel for the derailment crews who get to work this job. Getting a lot of snow and very cold tempatures. Hard to containe any oil in the river when the river is partially frozen.

Millions of citizens will now be horrified to find that oil. . . . burns.

It's technically on the New River Subdivision. Location of the derailment is about a half mile from Armstrong Creek.

This cleanup, in a flowing river with ice on it, will not be easy. Is the river navigable in that area? If so they can get better marine spill response equipment assets in there.

Based in Google Earth images and the context clues in the photos on the WSAZ site, it appears one house may have been completely consumed by the ensuring fire...the live feed of the first responders has indicated additional evacuations in the Adena Village area and very poor road conditions do to the winter storm there (they may get up to 10" of snow today).

Will Amtrak annul the Cardinal or set up a bus bridge? A couple years ago when CSXT derailed and took out a bridge between Indianapolis and Cincinnati, they simply annulled the train until line reopened.

This is the train around an hour before it derailed as it passed me at Marmet, WV. At the time it passed by my location, I did not notice anything or hear anything wrong with the train as it passed me. Apologies for the color from about :50 seconds on, my color sensor started acting up due to the cold weather.

Yes the river is navigable as far up river as Alloy, WV which I believe is right across the river - give or take - from the derailment site. So likely in the first navigable mile of the Kanawha river.

Interesting that you shot that video, due to the conditions & cold, though, I was out in it as well.

I'm sure investigators would want to have a copy of that.

There is a strange "Roar" starting at 2:16 for ten seconds or so. Starts low and gets louder as a car approaches..Real hard to guess what it is. Then the last car at @2:30
Definitely a loud train related noise but what?

It sounds like flat spots on one or more of the wheels.

Seemed to me two cars with noticeable but minor flat spots, a third one towards the end of the train didn't sound good. Maybe somebody can offer a more qualified opinion.

Suggest getting the link to somebody on the Investigation team. Or put it on YouTube and they'll pick it up pretty quick.

Derailment occurred with the first car, the buffer car, behind the power from what I've been told. Also, I have never heard of flat spots on the wheels any derailment anywhere.
