Fortunately it appears the escaping load was on an empty car based on the noncompressed springs. Does not hurt to call it in though--a decade ago substances of that character would have shut down an entire city--heck, just a couple of weeks ago here in Atlanta even a Georgia State University's art student's project found a way to shut down the main expressway for a few hours. I'll add that if you don't call it in someone else likely will. When I was a clerk I had to have the Dispatcher summon a track foreman to check out the possibility of a broken rail. Turns out it was a board across the rail but someone saw this from a distance and called the Police who in turn called up my number. Could I have taken it as nothing to worry about and not bothered? Who wants to take the risk if there actually was action required? Before that one time when I was on the Sperry car testing on the Southern Pacific toward Houston we had to pick up testing and go back along the siding to check on a car that was called in as being on fire. Turns out it was a refrigerator car running. This stuff happens, I say make your own judgement on what to do. Jim |
