New (to me) NS symbols in Harrisburg.
Author: dan7366

While listening to the live feed overnight, I heard a couple train symbols that I haven't heard before. Searching online was less than helpful, as I wasn't able to find any reference to either of the symbols, which was more recent than 2012. The symbols were 13R and 28Q. My assumption is that 28Q is autoracks. Can anyone provide any information on these?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

According to someone on a group covering territory from Harrisburg - South, the 11R now terminates in Harrisburg and the Harrisburg to Linwood section is the new 13R. Because of NS recently acquiring new trackage in New England the origination distance from Harrisburg has been lengthened. It was Binghamton, NY and now it is somewhere in MA. Speculation is because of the lengthened route, that the train route needed to be split in half somewhere (presumably not to delay outbound Harrisburg traffic if the train takes forever to come down from MA??). They still run a 12R north out of Linwood, so maybe the northbound counterpart still terminates in Binghamton.

Would love some more solid confirmation though.

Is 28Q the baretable that comes east on the Lurgan?

That's 24Q. 28Q came off the Pittsburgh Line, but I'm not sure where it went. I checked the NS intermodal schedule that they have on the website, and 28Q wasn't on it.

12R is still coming into Enola. I heard that this morning, with NS 2802 (SD75M) leading. Over the weekend, I heard at least 1 12R go out Enola to the Buffalo line. Maybe these are changes that took effect on March 1st, and that 12R going up the Buffalo line would have been one that originated prior to that date.

From what I've been able to gather, NS is splitting up some of the symbols that work Enola (though not all of them). So I'm not sure if it's a matter of improving time-performance statistics or something else.

37A Edgemoor-Conway is now split in two also, 37A to Enola, and 35A Enola to Conway.

Any others?

I heard 36A last night, having to wait to go into Enola, from the west. Does that mean that Enola - Edgemoor is now 38A?

Your guess on 28Q being auto racks is correct, should be empty, and I searched online as well and have come up with different sources.

One, being that M20 is as extention of 120 & 28Q, which originates in Georgia on the Atlanta District (Inman (Atlanta) or Brosnan (Macon) Yards) and heads North to Tennessee.

Then another showing a Decatur, IL to Detroit, MI train.

I've also located a 28Q on the former Nickel Plate near Valparaiso, IN, eastbound, saying it was empty racks for GM at Ft. Wayne.

Last, found a post from 2003 that 28Q was possibly headed for Philadelphia.

Hard to tell at this point where exactly it originates & ends unless an inside source could tell.

the former Pasha auto unloading facility in Philly on Delaware Ave hasn't seen rail action in a decade ... last time i went over the Walt Whitman Bridge it wasn't ready to start accepting auto racks with vehicles sitting on the 4 unloading tracks ...

Speaking of Pasha.....Does anyone remember the Mustin Yard Intermodal facility that was constructed in the early 2000's.....in Philadelphia....I was on the engineering team of that project....anyway, Mustin field was never used for intermodal due to labor relation stuff......is it possible to open up a civil conversation to discuss this one?

Last Friday night when flying from MSP to PHL we flew over the Mustin Field facility. All of the paved areas appear to be occupied by "white cars" I'm not sure what any of that means, but it is interesting.

Steve.

Well, I have now also heard the 35A - they tripped the high car detector coming out of Enola this morning (3/4/15) ~ 0235. The high car was from axle 716 - 720. That's gonna be quite the train.

28Q appears to be a one shot deal...loads Fostoria OH to Enola
