Northeast Kentucky's most hated train
Author: msullivan1993

CSX local Y206-04, the famous "Stink Train" that serves Envirosolutions' Big Run Landfill in Coalton, KY, has coupled on to their first cut of empty trash containers. Following a short brake test, the crew will pull out onto the old Lexington Subdivision mainline to double up their train before heading back to Russell Yard, where the train will change crews and become the outbound Q711-05 to head back to the Northeast. The mist of the heavily disputed "odor control" at the rail yard stands out during the heavy rains of the first part of Winter Storm Thor.

Q711 and Q710 are regular runners on the CSX Riverline nowadays...They used to run as 64J and 65J on NS when Mingo Junction Ohio used to be the interchange with the Ohio Central for these trains...Dave W.

So the state of Ky. allows trash from the Northeast to be dumped in Ky. Thats a smart/ dumb move on both areas. I'm sure that happens all over the US… Steve H.

I've seen/heard that pair running the B&O through MD recently, I suppose due to the issues in Selkirk environs? Oh, nice picture too!

Yes, unfortunately. If you look in local news articles the landfill has had a really bad streak for their quality control (If you have ever travelled I-64 in eastern Kentucky you have probably smelled the landfill), and now that the new train has been operating, the train has become the basis of a new set of arguements. Most are idiotic claims (my buddy that has sat in on the meetings has sent me messages of the claims, I wish I still had them...)

The Lexington Sub ran from Ashland to Lexington via Olive Hill, Morehead, and Winchester. The western section of it from Winchester to Lexington is now owned by RJ Corman. As for paralleling Paris Pike, I'm honestly not sure which road that is. Too far west for me. Lol

Gotta believe that train, when loaded, has lot of rats along for the ride....

The old C&O between Lexington and Winchester is abandoned except for a couple miles from Lexington east. The line along Paris Pike is the former L&N between Winchester and Lexington. Both lines are now operated by RJ Corman.

Thanks for your informative post and the neat pic. I've been at the origin of this stuff just south of Kearny yard in NJ opposite NYC. Five or six years ago that was a miserable operation and NS had the train which meant they had to run-around it opposite Journal Square Sta on PATH. On CSX it could be straight-forward past Kearny Intermodal and the CR connection to the River Line and north. But for the last few weeks with CSX's horrible service problems it has been running via the Philly Sub. Good to know where it terminates. Looks like it is about 11 miles west of Ashland like you say near I-64 is this an old place that used to be a steel fabricating place or something like that but looks like from aerial it could be several places nearby.
