CSXT/NS West of Chattanooga, TN
Author: CSXT_8437

Good Morning:

How many trains per day does NS run on CSXT between Chattanooga, TN and Stevenson, AL? How many does CSXT run over this segment? Is it joint trackage or owned entirely by CSXT?

Thank you in advance.

Owned by CSX. Originally the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad: http://tennesseeencyclopedia.net/entry.php?rec=1102. The NS operates via trackage rights.

Owned by CSX  with a somewhat  complicated track arrangement overall between CSXT and NS.

Overall, you will see between 50 to 60 trains per 24 hours thru these areas.

CSXT runs 20 to 30 trains a day between Chattanooga Tennessee and Stevenson Alabama

NS runs 10 to 20 trains a day thru the area

Majority of NS traffic is Distruibed Power ( DP-- or in this case, 2 engines on the head end and 2 engines on the rear end ) coal trains to and from Rhea RJ Scherer Coal Plant near Atlanta

When CSXT gets tp Chattanooga, , thru various abandonment's over the years,  the Track age rights change and NS becomes the Owner, with CSXT being granted Track age rights. This all happens at a place called 23rd street and continues all the way to East End.  At the location called East end, each railroad returns to their own tracks. Each railroad is independent and they do not run on each others tracks....just besides each other.   The railroads actually crossover themselves theu crossovers and slip switches.  Of note, at. near 23rd Street is where traffic to/from the Tennessee Valley Railway museum has the ability and occasionally does enter the Class 1 mainlines for steam trips to/from Alabama.  It's also where traffic to and from Birmingham  that is moving north  enters the mix.

I would put CSX's count closer to 20 a day through Stevenson. CSX seems to be routing as much of the north - south traffic through Birmingham as possible. CSX also runs a couple of locals out of Wauhatchie Yard towards Chattanooga.

NS will run about 17 a day through Stevenson. At Wauhatchie, NS gets back on its own rails and joins up with traffic from the AGS North District from Birmingham. That line adds about 10 trains a day. That would put traffic through Wauhatchie around 50 a day (about 27 NS and 23 CSX).

Thank you for the information. Is the diamond/crossover mentioned above relatively new? What trackage was abandoned on the part of CSXT to cause this arrangement in Chattanooga? Looking at a map, it seems like the diamond could somehow be eliminated.

Thank you again.
