Eastern Railroad Discussion > The Return of Full-Sized Trains to the Stewartstown RailroadDate: 05/26/15 20:29 The Return of Full-Sized Trains to the Stewartstown Railroad Author: bigjim4life Over Mother's Day weekend, 2015, the Stewartstown Railroad operated their first full-sized trains in over a decade out of their station in Stewartstown, PA. You may remember this line as the one which was almost declared abandoned a few years ago - thanks to the grassroots effort involved, now, train rides have returned to the line. Before, motorcars/speeders were used to give rides - now, their gasoline-powered Plymouth, #9 "Mighty Mo" and PRR cabin car are being used to give short rides over the first half-mile or so of trackage. With additional funding and volunteer hours, the line is slowly being brought up to be able to hold longer rides. Also, one of their passenger cars is getting closer and closer to restoration, and should be used later this summer on rides. This video is from the Sunday of Mother's Day weekend - and don't forget to visit my YouTube page for a longer, more in-depth video. Enjoy!

The folks who operate the Stewartstown Railroad still need a lot more money to get their line rebuilt. It would be so much better for them if they were operating from New Freedom as they would draw some customers from the Steam Into History train rides and from the many people who ride bikes on the trail and walk along the trail. This is NOT to take away from the Steam Into History riders but rather complement both operations as folks would be able to ride on two completely different operations. Just my thoughts. One thing for sure; the Stewartstown Railroad is in poor shape overall with very light rail which will limit what they can operate and their speed.

There is a neat revival going on in PA now with tourist railroads. Within easy driving distance of Strassburg we have this operation, the WK&S, the new Colebrookdale operation near Boyertown, and the Allentown and Auburn in Kutztown. Thanks for sharing!
