Current hump yards in North America
Author: florida581

Since this is frequently brought up topic, the following are the current hump yards in North America:

The following are:
1. Active yards. Most are large with 30 or more tracks, but the mini humps have less than 20.
2. Have high profile humps (around 15' - 25'). Yards equipped with Dowty retarders usually have lower profile humps. Mini humps also have lower profile humps.
3. Have automated retarders (usually one main retarder and then group retarders) or Dowty retarders. Mini humps usually have only a master retarder OR have retarders on one rail instead of both.
4. Are "network" yards, meaning they build trains for each respective railroad's entire system and not for an individual industry. All the following are used for the classification of loose carload freight.

No. They actually were planning to turn Deramus Yard in Sheveport, LA into a hump yard with Dowty retarders, but ultimately the plan was mothballed.

NS-Moorman (Bellevue, OH) is now a double hump.

I had a hard time trying to classify that yard (no pun intended). Both class bowls (separated by the car shops) share a common hump crest.

Alton and Southern has a similar arrangement to Moorman Yard - two tracks over a common hump.

In fact, 8 yards are set up like that: NS Conway, NS Moorman, CSX Rice, UP Proviso, UP Bailey East, CN MacMillan, CN Symington, and A&S Gateway. They all have 2 tracks over a common hump that lead into a single class bowl. This design allowed two trains to be humped simultaneously.

However, the unique thing about Moorman Yard is that a common two-track hump crest leads into two separate class bowls.

It's listed there. Boyles Yard is located in Fultondale, AL, which is a northern suburb of Birmingham.
