Two of AK Steel's switchers, ElectroMotive SW1001s, proceed west along the industrial tracks located next to the Ohio River towards AK Steel's "West Works" steel mill in West Ashland. The train is seen passing by the entrance of Ashland's Riverfront Park after picking up cars loaded with taconite ore from interchange with CSX at the former Chesapeake & Ohio yard just east of this location.

Any idea what that shield in front of the radiator is for?

 apparently AK employees at Ashland do not have the "safety rules" that occurr in the Butler Pa Plant.  I am referring to straw hats (not hard hats) and short sleeved shirts.  Butler PA plant armors its imployees with PPD and strictly enforces it with a gestapho like attitude

I'm wanting to say that it's to be used by the operator whenever they go into the mill to dump the kettle cars and what not.

I see hard hats and long-sleeves (with orange tees over them) on all three employees.

Does AK still operate blast furnaces in one of the Ashalnd plants?

I believe the plant at the west end still does.
