Here is a link to a news story showing security film footage of the runaway hopper which damaged New Yor Central 6721 & Utica's Union Station on July 21st:

As you can see, Amtrak passengers were waiting on the other side of the building.

That was scary. It could have been real ugly.

I haven't been to Utica in years, I was wondering how/why were the switches lined for the track the display locomotive was on???

in one video a guy in white pants looks up and sees the errant hopper bearing down towards the station and he casually walks between the display locomotive and station SECONDS before the hopper slams into it

The engine is beyond the bumper post at the end of the tail track that NY, S&W uses when switching the east end of their yard.  The west end of this track is connected to CSX main #2 via a cross-over.  If the cossover switch was left lined for the cross-over then the runaway car would have gone onto main #2.

that switch should be an electric lock with a middle man throw that can't lock into the keeper until the switches on either end are lined and locked normal ...
