Buffalo this past weekend (765 and others)
Author: BaltimoreOhio

I live in Cincinnati, and while I had passed through Buffalo several times on the freeways, and even ridden through it a few times on the LAKE SHORE, I had never actually stepped foot in Buffalo proper.  So when the 765 trip was announced, it was the perfect chance to both ride the train and see a new city.  My wife and I got up there Friday, rode the train to Corning Saturday, and did a little more filming Sunday AM before heading home.  Granted, it didn't hurt that the weather was perfect, but we both came away pleasantly surprised with the entire area.  To say nothing of some great food and friendly people we met while up there.  Friday evening we stopped by Depew Street.  First came a local that backed past us led by a former Conrail caboose.  A few minutes later, a westbound led by a CP unit came by, and if you look way in the background you can see the headlight of the Amtrak train shown arriving at the station a few minutes later.

Here are some pics of Sunday's departure, taken from behind the Buffalo Fire Historical Museum.  The train had to back out the yard and just cleared the switch near where we were standing.

After the excursion departed Sunday AM, we stopped back at the Amtrak station to see the arrival of the eastbound LAKE SHORE, with New York Central 3 on the rear.  The last pic shows the train arriving at the depot after our layover in Corning.

Finally a few miscellaneous shots.  First we have a view from the trestle at Letchworth on the return trip Saturday afternoon.  Sunday morning we came across this Reading caboose in Cheektowaga (correct me if I'm wrong but the Reading never came this far west?).  And finally, not the best train photograph ever but I had to commemorate my first (and presumably not last) visit to Buffalo.

i thought the Letchworth trestle was deemed privatr property and gated to keep trespassers off the bridge ...

Ummmm...if you read a little more carefully, he indicates the pic was taken while RIDING Saturdays train.

Very nice photo travel log. The closest Reading RR came to Buffalo was Newberry Jct, PA, just west of Williamsport, where there was interchange with the NYC line that ran north to Corning, NY and ultimately Lyons, NY.

I hope you had "suds" with those wings!

I can vouch that picture was taken safely from the train on Saturday.  However, after seeing that trestle for the first time, I can assure you, gates or no gates, I don't think the RR will have to worry about me walking across it anytime soon ;)
