CSX Derailment east of Muncie, Ind.
Author: DrLoco

As information, This blurb is from the Muncie Star-Press.  It was so short, I didn't feel that everyone that was interested should have to jump through all of the hoops Gannett newspapers put up for you to actually *see* an article, and just copied it here.  If that's a problem, let me know, I'll link to the story...
This derailment happened on the CSX INdianapolis Line Subdivision (former Conrail, NYC et all) and is the secondary mainline from St. Louis (Via Indianapolis) to Cleveland and points east.

PARKER CITY - Randolph County officials were responding Wednesday afternoon to a 16-car train derailment that had closed one county road.
Sheriff Ken Hendrickson said Randolph County Road 1000-W, which runs directly east of Monroe Central Jr-Sr. High School, would be closed for several hours.
The sheriff said nine of the 16 cars -- which were empty coal cars -- were off the tracks and on their sides near the crossing. Seven other cars remained upright but were considered derailed, he said.
The derailed cars were at the end of a westbound locomotive, on the east-west tracks that run parallel to Ind. 32.
No injuries were reported. Traffic on county roads 900-W and 1100-W has been not impacted by the derailment, which was reported just after 3:30 p.m., the sheriff said.
Hendrickson said cranes would likely have to be brought to the scene to lift the overturned cars back onto the tracks.
The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, but foul play was not suspected, the sheriff said.

If no fatalities or injuries a derailmento f empty coal cars is not much of a problem. But I would not call CSX's Indianapolis Line a secondary main line. since they purcheased Conrail in 1999 it has been CSX's primary main line from the Northeast to the Southeast especially Texas. It is the shortest route between CSX and UP when routed over St Elmo between many Northeast and TX/LA locations.

It's considered secondary to the Chicago line of the former B&O.

Farmer's reply was more what I was going after, TP...and yeah, no fatalities, hazmats involved...just empty coal hoppers.
It's a mainline, to be sure...but as a 20-year career engineer on this division (and i know *exactly* which spot this derailment happened at), we are treated as secondary in the eyes of CSX Corp.

Train was E497-31. Old hoppers going to scrapper. A friend saw this train in western Ohio a short time before this train derailed. He posted to Facebook "WB empty square wheel wobble express CSX white coal hopper train going by Ansonia, Oh"

Good thing nobody was hurt. On double track, that can be a nightmare.

whenever there's a derailment 3 departments bounce back and forth pointing fingers at who's responsible ... operations, mechanical and MW ... this one sounds like mechanical will be biting the bullet for this debacle ...

ID dispatcher isn't having a good night. One of the first-if not the first-train through the derailment site went into emergency at MP 181 on track 1 (Versailles, Oh) due to a drawbar.

Sounds like they should have just cut up the whole train on the spot, rather than just the derailed cars.
