Eastern Railroad Discussion > Thunder in the PoconosDate: 09/30/15 07:44 Thunder in the Poconos Author: toledopatch I took a week's vacation last week in Pennsylvania, southern New England, and New York, with one of my primary goals being to shoot the Delaware-Lackawanna running a heavy train, if I could find one, on the PT98/PT97 interchange run from Scranton to Slateford/Portland, PA. On Thursday, Sept. 24, I got my wish. While the PT98 eastbound had just 15 cars, the train from the NS had 46, half of them grain loads for the mill at Pocono Summit. I decided that besides shooting my normal still photos, I needed to shoot some video with my iPhone, if only to record the sound of five Alco/MLW locomotives dragging that heavy train up the grade out of Analomink. I propped the phone against a half-full soda bottle on a bridge parapet at Cresco to get this result. It may not be the highest-quality video ever made, but I'm glad I got it.

~RGDave Date: 09/30/15 08:25 Re: Thunder in the Poconos Author: Tominde I'm impressed with the sound quality. The angle almost looks like from a drone. Neat video.

They look like frac sand cars to me ...... Awesome video ! Date: 09/30/15 09:49 Re: Thunder in the Poconos Author: florida581 Excellent video! I think the quality from some phones are fine especially since a lot of the footage of that kind of power was captured using super 8.

The first 19 cars, including the frac sand cars you mention, were non-grain. Then there were 23 cars of grain (mostly BNSF hoppers), and four more "miscellaneous" cars at the end. At least that's what I do.
I also save them to a folder & delete from my phone to clear space. toledopatch Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > cr2581 Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > The stuff dreams are made of ....... are you > sure > > the hoppers were grain ? > > > > They look like frac sand cars to me ...... > > > > While I videoed the whole train, I couldn't get > the whole 4+ minute clip to email out of my phone. > The first 19 cars, including the frac sand cars > you mention, were non-grain. I figured I probably had the ability to do that (with the proper cable) but just hadn't gotten around to investigating it. Date: 09/30/15 10:53 Re: Thunder in the Poconos Author: frankgaron3 Thanks for sharing this video. I think it came out great - really enjoyed the sound. I usually only have time to chase the eastbound trip to Slateford but I know where I'm shooting video at next time I chase the westbound!

Winchester Western sand is usually for glass production or locomotive traction unlike the frac sand that comes from the west. I'd venture this is sand for glass at one of the industries in the Wilkesboro-Scranton Area. Thanks for posting this almost sounds like a Shay! Gonut Edited 1 time(s).
