In search of the elusive Whiteface (NS9752)
Author: KNTower

Chris Starnes gave us a heads-up on eastbound coal train 782 coming our way with new Whiteface/
Horsehead 9752 in the lead. He had it approaching Bulls Gap around 1:30PM on Saturday and arriving in Asheville around midnight.

DV Cabin and I went to Asheville in search of the engine and found it sitting at the diesel shop in Asheville, off limits.

The outbound 782 had been planned for 3:00AM but had not gotten out by the time we arrived at Asheville.

While we were at Asheville, a 78A coal train arrived with 85 airdumps. The crew tied the train down, took their units to the shop, and went off duty.

Train 782 finally got called for 2:30PM, but with a twist. Piedmont 782 turned out to be the same train as the inbound Tennessee Division 78A. This was an airdump train for Duke Power\'s Buck Steam Station at Spencer, NC, a rare move for the S-Line.

The engine consist for our 782 was also different. The shop crew put the shiny new 9752 with 9183 and 8418(CR).

Attached is my shot of 782 near MP S-116, up the hill from Andrews Geyser. Soon the train will make a full reversal through the horseshoe curve that surrounds the geyser. This place is often called Round Knob and is between High Fill and Dendron.

A rear view of the new unit was requested. Here is 9752 sitting at Old Fort, NC, as the crew works retainers.

Nice! Those "penguins" are going to make NS a bit more interesting :-)

Nice shots KN, looks like GE made some more truck modifications. Check out that rear truck.

The strange thing is... in looking at pics of 9752\'s other side (from another thread), that extra whatchamacallit on the rear truck is ONLY on the rear truck, and only on that side.

Hopefully I\'ll get one of the new GE\'s in a consist soon, and will be able to check it out...

I have to admit, the GE junk is going to be fun to fan again with the horsehead scheme. Well, until all bizillion of the -9s are repainted to it.

I think this paint scheme is great especially on safety cabs. It adds more variety which NS sometimes need. Great pictures guys!!

NS9752 was shoving a hopper train into the old Spencer Yard at 6 PM tonight. It was the last unit of the 3 engines
