NS Tests Mid-Train DPUs in Central Ohio and Runs Into Problems
Author: lefflerlad

Today Norfolk Southern ran an NS 101-05 east on the Dayton District and then north onto the Sandusky District in central Ohio. This is a mixed freight train that is 13,000 feet long and 12,000 tons with 2 units up front and 2 DPUs mid-train. It was getting along okay until 7:30 pm where it ran into some issues at Route 98 on the Sandusky District. As of 9:30 pm it is still sitting there after having received help from C58-06 that came off the Fort Wayne Line to attach to the head end. This blockage is on a section of single track and has backed up 117-06, 859-06, 51V-02, 860-05, 116-05, 17M-05, and 305-06. It is my understanding that there are no sidings long enough to hold this train before it gets to Bellevue and that the crew has until 11:35 pm to work. Some of our other TO members have some additional insight as well as pictures of this move so hopefully they will share. This looks like it will continue to be a problem for the next hour, so if you are out and about in the area it might be of interest.

Once it gets north of Chatfield, its length will no longer be an issue, since the Sandusky District is double track from there to Flat Rock.

Looks like they split the train with the first half (101-05) nearing Chatfield and the second half (M01-06) still sitting at Route 98. 10:21 pm.

Kept dumping the air, conductor had to walk the 26,000 feet a few times. Each time its a slower walk, not that it matters because you won't fit many places and any yard getting this is going to hold you out because they don't want it. Same ol same ol let the dollars blow away to save pennies
