CSX SD40-2 "What's in the Box" ?

Was down New Orleans way the other day. At the west end of the ol L&N Yard at Gentilly I found a pair of CSX SD40-2's working on kicking cars around. On the Lead or west end unit, CSX 8223 noticed this box mounted on the nose, along with the "rod" sticking out from above the Cab. Are these some sort of RC or something completely different?  Ben

Early version of RCO equipment. I don't think newer RCO mods require that type of space and the stuff is in the cab.
