NS has acquired 10 SD90MAC's from CIT Group in trade for 15 NS EMD MP15DC switchers.  Here is my roster page for the SD90's:

I find this kind of sad, as I liked the paint scheme on the Indiana RR SD9043MAC's.

Indiana Railroad still has SD90's on lease from CIT. NS only acquired 4 of the units leased by the INRD.

I suspect they will most likely go thru the same rebuild that NS is doing to the 100 UP 90/43s they aquired.
NS must really LOVE those units to trade for more!!

I think the real truth here is that NS really HATES the tier 4 units.

Why spend 4+million on a new turd? When you can polish an old one for a quarter (if that) of the price.

Dollars aside on the new vs old/rebuilt debate, just what issues has the NS been having with their new GE Tier 4's? The UP and BNSF have lots of them, and I don't see them having any more issues than their other slightly older GE road units normally have.

I don't know if it was anything serious, but SEVERAL of the new NS Tier IVs died in the first week, some on their first trip.

Although I could see that as frustrating, I'd hardly call it a reason to write off the hole group of them right off the bat. That's why they have things called warranties. I'm sure GE will get it straightened out.

No question about that, but COULD be an indication that these beasts will be more temperamental than their predecessors.  One thing I'll bet money on is that even IF these Tier IV units (EMD and GE) perform exactly as intended, they will still likely cost a good bit more to maintain and repair them, and I haven't heard anybody give fuel use comparisons either.  If they follow the path of their on highway brethren, the will be a bit more thirsty.

You can rebuild two full EMD power assemblies for the price of just one fuel injector on of these Tier-4 GE's. So yeah...there is a huge difference in price.

Is this the reason NS purchased them or was it another reason? I know there going to convert them to SD70ACU's, but I'm going to try real hard to see 7337 when he comes on 23K.
