Question about southern locomotives.
Author: upheritage6

On my HO Scale southern high hoods, there are letters right next to the numbers on the side of the cab. J, K, H are the letters, what do they mean?

They are check letters. They were a method Southern used to guard against data-entry errors when clerks logged engine numbers. If you look up threads about the NS 8099, the Southern Heritage Unit, you will find plenty of more detailed discussion about this, since the NS8099 has the appropriate check letter to match its number (K).
