NS 8101 on 11J
Author: sscannella

11J heading west from Rockville @ 08:50 with 8101 as a one-unit-wonder with just 19 cars this morning.  Good luck to all out west.

Awesome photo. I love the hill and trees in this photo. Anyway, thanks for starting the topic of 8101. 11J goes to Detroit MI. With only 19 cars and one unit, I have to say this train should fly across PA and get to eastern Ohio by evening. This is the one of 5 HU's I have left to see.

A 19-car 11J might not even go all the way to Detroit. Sometimes these trains terminate at Fairlane, OH. Especially likely if all of this particular train's cars are Fairlanes, but any Detroits could be added to another train there.

Lorain/Amherst/Vermilion area. Not sure where the political boundaries are.

An eastbound 18N into Doremus Avenue Newark NJ often becomes the next morning's 15J or 11J.  For folks keeping score at home. NS had been looping trains so 18N becomes 11J/15J becomes a Detroit to Fostoria train. Repeat as necessary.

Doremus Avenue is used as a stub end yard, set away from the Oak Island complex.  So, power in usually becomes power out, just reversing ends. Not all the time, but often enough to look out for special units, etc.

18N usually has 3 units thru Harrisburg, and usually makes an Enola set-off at BANKS. The 3 units then get split between 11J and 15J the next day.

And the Detroit-Fostoria train cited above is 14T, although it does not consistently get the power from 11J, nor does its power consistently relay to 18N. 18N's power usually arrives in Fostoria on Bellevue-based autorack transfer L83.

Is 11J the train referred by crews as "all day 11J" because of the slow pace it seems to travel or lower priority.

That's the one.

All empty racks, it's a low priority train, especially now because the auto plants are retooling for the new model year.

I don't see it making it to Ohio by evening, but you never know.

OK. I've seen the cycle a few times, and figured it was likely to repeat.

Per Heritage Units, 8101 went through Altoona at 12:45 and then passed through Cresson at at 1:11. Going by the Conrail back on June 30th on 21J passed the around the curve at 2:33PM and made it to the Ohio / PA border around 7PM and then back earlier this month July 3rd 8098 was on 21M passed the curve at 2:39PM and passed the ohio / pa border around 7 as well. I'm not saying it will make it to Ohio before dark, but because acctually how quick 8101 on 21J made it from Harrisburg to Cresson, it still might make it into Ohio area before dark or evening with still enough light.

I will say though it sure was a good day to be on Horseshoe Curve. Lackawanna, Jersey Central, Central of Georgia and now Pennslyvania 8102. 4 Heritage Units around the horseshoe. That's a good day.

Went away for a bit and came back to Heritage Units and see 8101 is in Wilmerding PA at 3:24PM. I assume he will probably get to Conway at or around 4:30PM to 5PM.

Just to clarify some confusion. The NS Fairlane Yard is in Lorain Ohio off of the Chicago line. Fairlane Ohio is a suburb of Dayton.

The NS Cleveland district runs north of Fairlane, but doesn't have a connection to the yard.

The Dayton suburb is Fairborn.
