Harrisburg - Heritage Hot Spot
Author: JayK

The Harrisburg, PA area usually gives the photographer a good chance of catching one of the NS Heritage Units on any given day. Located at the confluence of the Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Buffalo, and Lurgan lines the traffic through here is impressive. On Thursday 6/25/16 you could have seen four heritage units on four different trains. Actually that's not that unusual - but all four were leading - and I don't recall that happening before.

1. The Central of Georgia unit leads the "all day" 11J through Newton-Hamilton at 1046. It crossed over the Rockville Bridge approximately two hours earlier, before we arrived on the scene.

2. Now it's time to chase an eastbound back into town. Here we see the Lackawanna unit leading 20W under the 1910 cast concrete bridge in Port Royal, PA.

3. After a crew change in Harrisburg NS 1074 passes through CP Paxton near the Amtrak station and enters the Harrisburg Line on the way towards Croxton, NJ.

After a quick lunch we headed west on the Pittsburgh Line once again.

1. We intercepted 14G with the Pennsylvania Heritage Unit in Lewistown, PA and followed it back into town. At 1759 we caught it at Kinkora Heights running ahead a thunderstorm that would cool us off from 105 down to about 85.

2. Earlier in the day the Jersey Central unit snuck into town from the west under our radar . But now it was poised to take 24J, a baretable train, west. The monsoon has arrived but we are determined to catch it sitting in front of Harris Tower at 636 PM awaiting a signal to proceed west.

3. The storm eventually passed and our patience was rewarded at 729 PM when the sun dropped below the dissipating clouds lighting up NS 1071.
