Pssst... Wanna buy a coal mine?
Author: Lackawanna484

The NY Times has an article this weekend about a guy who has bought dozens of coal mines, and become one of the biggest owners of met coal and steam coal in the US.  Tom Clarke has bought mines from Patriot and Arch, so the spectacular rise in met coal (coal used in steel making) prices has bailed him out.  He's been associated with prominent players over the years, including Jim Justice, the Greenbrier Resort proprietor and coal magnate.

The plan is simple. Coal produces carbon dioxide and lots of junk.  Trees use carbon dioxide, and count as green credits. Plant many more trees than the extracted coal would offset, then sell the coal with the "green credits". In addition, use some of the abandoned mines to store recaptured carbon dioxide, known as sequestration.

The United Mine Workers has money in the deal. The environmental community is skeptical, believing this is an end run by the big coal operators to dump their reclamation and health care liabilities. They argue this is junk science.  This will end up in the courts, for sure.

Coal mine or money pit?

The climate change and CO2 increase has brought the Dakotas in as prominent grain and corn producers,
Iowa and Nebraska have had three, going on four, record crop years in a row. The people using the 400 ppm
number as a static number ie tipping point, might want to get out from behind their computer.

Lots of land there too. Maybe everyone who lives along the coast of Florida can move there in 30 years when their houses are under water.

Florida is slowly sinking due to the weight of the imports from New York!

There's a saying in Florida that the Mason-Dixon line reasserts itself somewhere around Jupiter or Palm Beach. The North is south of that point.

Meanwhile in the real world the ice caps are not melting....

I been told FLA is conservative north of I-4 and liberal south of it, probably due to the retired Northerners. Not sure if that's true this year, though.

There's a lot of truth to that, although it may be more of an income thing.  Places like Tampa, Sarasota, Jacksonville, Treasure Coast, Gold Coast, Miami, Naples, Marco Island etc have a significant number of middle to left leaning politicians representing them.  Go farther inland, and the "old Florida" asserts itself pretty quickly.

People like John Mica, viewed as Satan on this board, were the guys who got the Sunrail commuter line funded and operational.  He pushed for it, and got the deal done.  People like Al Travasos brought county and federal legislators together to get Tri-Rail financed 30 years ago. It's just not a Republicans are evil, Democrats are good kind of thing.

Are there any checks and balances to keep the people who live out of state and then spend the late fall, winter, and early spring months down south from voting back home and in Florida?

Probably not.  Remember this word:  Evapotransporation.   Anybody who claims this only happens over land is full of it.  The great unknown is the worldwide evapotranspiration rate in 3, 5 or even 10 years.  The process is not completely understood because climate scientists have spent too much time concentrating on only one aspect of it...Earth surface temperatures.

You're asked to solemnly swear, so that should be good enough.

(/Sarcasm)

I know that some states check when you apply for a driver's license.  I kept my out of state license for a few months after I moved back to NJ.  Got a note from NJ asking me to stop by for a conversation about why the old one hadn't been cancelled.  On the other hand, a trucker involved in a serious accident in Elizabeth NJ had 14 different state licenses under various names.  No reason he couldn't have used them to vote 14 times, and maybe he will in 2085 when he gets out of jail...

And to Allen's comment, we keep cleaning up the air and the surface temperature will increase even more.

The earth water temperatures have gotten some attention from the hurricane and tropical storm people.  As the water temps off west Africa rise, the numbers of serious storms seem to be increasing. And, as the Caribbean Sea temperatures rise, storms can pick up more energy.

That's become an issue with the current Atlantic Storm Matthew as waters in the Bahamas are the warmest in recent years for the area.

.....Naples, Marco Island.....

Left leaning?   You are not informed.  Or, misinformed.

take the whole quote, don't just cherry pick it.  Left leaning or moderate.  Porter Goss and Connie Mack, both recent holders of the seat would qualify.

There's an enormous amount of money in Lee and Collier counties, and a whole lot of people who got screwed out of their (often over mortgaged) homes in places like Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, etc. How that shakes out is anyone's guess this year.
