Two Questions On The NS Piedmont Line....
Author: NSSpike

…..Manifest Traffic & DPU Application south of Spencer YardMainly interested on what manifest trains run north / south through Atlanta via the Piedmont.
Manifest trains To/From Birmingham / New Orleans / MaconSome that I know of are: 118/119 153/154 172/173 191/192?

More specifically related to these manifest trains is the application of either mid-train or rear DPU's.  NS 154 (BIRMINGHAM, AL - LINWOOD, NC) for the first six months of this year has run with mid-train and now rear of train DPU's. Either one or two rear units in DP mode. Number of cars when it enters Georgia will range between 140 / 180 cars. Set outs occur at Bremen, Douglasville, Chamblee Georgia. Not sure if a stop at Chamblee GA includes a pick up? No west bound manifests have DPU's applied and both 153 and 173 usually include more empties then loads. NS 173 can run upwards of 11,000 + ft, but again includes a large number of empties. Four head end units is common with 3 on line.

#1. What other manifest trains besides 154 run with DPU's applied south of Spencer Yard?

Of late on two occasions NS has run a west bound manifest on the Alabama East End district as M18??Following NS train symbol protocol, that would be an extra 118 (MACON GA-LINWOOD NC)Not sure I understand this routing west to Birmingham?

#2. Anyone have any idea why this routing?

In advance, Thanks

Phil
