Inspecting the Rails in Durand
Author: SDP40F600

Here are a few from last July of Herzog crew inspecting the diamons of the crossing of the Holly and Flint subdivisions of Canadian National in Durand, Michigan.

Photo 1: The Herzog inspection truck slowly moves across the diamonds.

Photo 2: A closeup of the pickup shoes or whatever they are called that are sending data to the crew inside the truck.

Photos 3 and 4: The truck stopped a short distance from the diamond and four men got out. One of them would spray the rails while another used a device to test them.

Photo 5: The on the ground rail testing here complete, the crew reboards the truck and heads on to check out the rails elsewhere. The guy at the far right is with CN while the rest of the men are Herzog employees. It is all in a day's work in the ongoing efforts to keep the rails safe.

I did not realize Herzog was in the rail testing business. Thought it was only Sperry and Dapco.

on Amtrak the Sperry car couldn't test the closure or frog areas of a switch nor could the machine test a diamond frog which all hadda be hand tested ... Sperry Rail has a hand testing crew that would come down and do the interlockings on the NEC ... I had to be their pilot of sorts to give them their RWP job briefings and get any foul time needed if necessary ...

Baby oil is what Sperry Rail uses for ultrasound hand testing ... It fills in any voids and is a conductor of the unlltrasound ... Joe would carry cases of baby oil in his truck ...
