Odd mix to make-up a consist
Author: Cumberland

In Railfan94's recent popular thread, a photo of train CSX's Q141 (as titled then), a consist of just two of CSX's passenger cars, an old coal car and a box car makes-up the train. I saw a picture of the same train another TO member had taken, not too long ago.

What was the purpose of adding the two freight cars to the train? What are they carrying that makes them so important?

Maybe they're for extra braking capacity? Haven't seen the pix you referenced.

From what I get that pix is the W001 geometry train. The frieght car could be there for braking or more probably fitted with sensors to check ride quality. There used to be an AAR box car that wobbled so bad you thought it was gonna jump the tracks travelling with the Conrail geometry train back in the day.

UP ran just such a train, loaded hoppers plus the telemetry car, checked side loading on curves
at various speeds.

Both the boxcar (CSXT 994370) and the hoppercar (TUVX 001) are used for rail detection, along with the two passenger cars in the short train.
