Hello All,

Back in December I went took a trip down south. Here's some photos of the Lancaster and Chester Railroad.

These photos were taken on Sunday December 11, 2016.

Photos 1-3 show the Lancaster and Chester Railroad locomotives in Chester South Carolina. 

L&C 2866 is a GP38AC, L&C 3821 is a GP38-2.

L&C 9146 is a C40-8. It is currently a "road slug".

L&C 6002 is a SD40T-2.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing them.

The L&C used to have a wonderfully restored business car. Do they still own it?

Was there a sale on leftover Conrail paint?    It appears these units are CR heritage, but perhaps not. 

Nice photos. Were the dynamic brakes removed ? What is the lineage of this unit ?

The railroad was originally controlled by the people who owned Springmaid, the bed sheet and pillow case people.

(in the first part of the 20th century, fabric manufacturers left New England and New Jersey etc in search of cheap labor, no unions, and low taxes. Springs Cotton and Springmaid and the L&C were beneficiaries of that trend.

Places like Merrimack Paterson Woonsocket Fall River etc emptied out as mills closed.)

I seem to recall the Lancaster 7 Chester had a fleet of wonderful,
properly maintained EMD SW1200's, and as needed they would be
operated in tandem. All sold on to others or?

Back in the late '40's, the L&C folks (or more specifically, Elliott White Springs, L&C President) had a pretty good sense of humor; my dad used get a quite a charge reading their listing in the Official Guide.  The full page L&C listing in the Guide looked like any other, until one closely read the list of L&C Officers.  A 29 mile long freight line with 60+ corporate officers, including a Dining Car Supervisor, a Director of Education, an Atomic Engineer, numerous Company Surgeons, and most importantly, a Vice-President in Charge of the White Horse Scotch Supply.   Mr. Springs was an interesting fellow (a WWI Flying Ace, and later, an author), and I understand that most of the "L&C Officers" listed were his personal friends - whom he listed as "Officers of the L&C" much as the State of Kentucky makes its honorees "Kentucky Colonels".  Some of those names listed in my 1949 Guide are still recognizable today - artist James Montgomery Flagg, Admiral "Bull" Halsey, and writer/broadcaster Lowell Thomas, for example.  All are "hiding in plain sight" in an otherwise humorless 1500 page book, and are only revealed by a close reading of that one page.  Over 60 years later, and I still laugh when I read it. 

            6002 is obviously NOT ex Conrail since it is an SD/40-T2. Good chance it was ex Southern Pacific with that nose.

Gypsy Rose Lee was vice president of unveiling. She made appearances for the railroad (clothed), mostly in NYC.

6002 is ex UP 8802 nee SP 8257. I don't know about the dynamic brakes.

3821 is the only ex-Con on the railroad currently. It came by way of HLCX and NS. They have painted their fleet some shade of blue for decades, but the current version does look a lot like Conrail

By the 2000s, they owned three SW900s, four SW1200s and two SW1500s. All are gone save for two SW900s.
