New CSX "8-40CWM"?
Author: F2Craft_Rail

Pictures recently surfaced on Instagram of what are being called the GE "8-40CWM". Apparently, they are the CSX version of the AC44C6M, except built off of a c40-8w instead of a c40-9. They have some strange modifications on the radiators and new paint, that's all I could tell that was different visually. Anyone have any more info on these?

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing them.

I wonder if the railroads will ever apply bar codes to builders plates or elsewhere, so the employees who complete work can zap the code, and sign off via their tablet?  Hospitals have a lot of patient verification, medicine, etc set up that way.

They are still DC locomotives. No AC conversion here. They just have a new control system (upgrade to CCA from IFC), rebuilt engine, new cab interior, fresh paint, body work as needed, and a few other refurbs. The hardware mounted above the radiators are shutters which are used to manage coolant temperature. Attached is a picture of the first of ten when it was completed.

Stay tuned for the blue Tier 4 demo units that CSX will purchase from GE. Think it will be 8 locos.

This is news to me. Could you also call them a C40-8WM or C40-8MW?

I wonder if these have the same interior as the gevos do or the same type only refurbished. Anyway nice to see this one. What's with CSX getting the 8 Tier IV demos? Thought GE would keep at least one of them.

That photo with the snow fooled me before I logged back in. I seen the small tumbnail photo and the way the snow reflects on the side, I thought they paint similar to the NS DC o AC units.

If CSX is getting eight of the demo units, I think this'll be the first time GE has sold off demonstrator units since the U25B demos were sold off to Union Pacific over 50 years ago... Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

EDIT- Now that I think of it, GE did sell off the discarded cab from their B40-8 demo unit to Conrail so they could repair wreck-damaged C32-8 #6612; the B40-8 demo had since been retrofitted with a wide-nose cab... But even with this my original point still stands since the entire locomotive wasn't sold off...

Many units have barcodes in the cab.

Thank you.

Are they used to scan for work orders, updates, etc?

Well atleast they'll add some variety. 'New' dash-8's on a class one, never would've guessed. It was looking as if all the conversions would be to Dash 9 and newer loc's.

Still desktop controls just with IFC, or modified to the ES44 style control stand?

Which likely indicates they are upgraded to the split cooling system, first found in GE's very latest Dash 8's, and all of the Dash 9 series.

Nice shot there, Dunecoon.
It obvious they're not AC conversions as there's no room really for the AC inverters ect,  By upgrading they're able to dodge some of the mandates placed on builders now.
I dunno where anyone would get the idea they're converted to AC traction...
As far as -9s, CSX doesn't have any as we know them, the 9000 series is as close to a -9 as csx gets, they have several differences from a CW40-8 if looked at closely externally. The two bigger items noticed to the naked eye is a fatter radiator section and one extra step in the stairwells. One could say the 9000s are a -9 in a -8 body. GE hadn't introduced the -9 into the catalog as the time csx got the 9000s.

If they were AC conversions, wouldn't they also have the "lightning bolt" under the #?

The 9000 series are dash 9 tech in a dash 8 carbody.  IIRC these were testbeds for the Dash 9 tech.
