Seems like every time I am traveling for business and manage to swing a few hours to railfan, it rains!  And so it was last Wed Jan 11 when I was at Transportation Research Board in Washington.  I had a few hours off from the conference and so I went over to L'Enfant Plaza VRE, and rode to Alexandria and Springfield/Franconia.  It was a very dark afternoon!  But that just makes for moody photos, right?
1.  First train up at L'Enfant Plaza was a southbound CSX intermodal.  In the background is the Virginia Avenue Tunnel that was the subject of a recent TRAINS article.
2.  Next was southbound Amtrak Train No. 95 - a Boston-Newport News train.
3.  Shortly behind was Amtrak Train No. 91, the southbound Silver Star.

4.  Next was a southbound VRE Fredericksburg train.  I rode this train to Alexandria.

What a great assortment of Wash DC railroading!  Too bad you didn't catch any of the new double stacks coming throuth the just-opened Virginia Avenue Tunnel.  A cloudy day trackside with that many trains is still a pretty good day :)  P
