N&W 611 Ferry Move Jan 6, 2017
Author: NS2501

On January 6, 2016, the iconic Norfolk & Western No. 611 ran from the Virginia Museum of Transportation down to the North Carolina Transportation Museum on a ferry move. I decided to get a few pictures at spots that I thought would provide for some decent shots during a brief chase. I'll save the the real chasing for the upcoming excursions. Well, here they are! Hope you enjoy!

1.) N&W 611 sings her unmistakable song as the train ducks under the old Southern-era cantilevers at CP "Edna" in Reidsville. 611 will roll under these signals only a few more times this year before they are stricken from active duty, becoming the next victims to the march of progress. In a way, the gloomy weather was fitting for the occasion.
2.) The mighty 611 hardly makes a sound as it slips through the recently opened double track section just south of Thomasville, NC. I am still quite surprised at how quiet such an impressive machine can be when it's simply out for a walk rather than a hard run.

Thanks for looking!

How about that first pic background!   Lucky Strike (means fine tobacco.)

Take out that truck on the left, the Vaders waiting to go in service, and a few other things and you might think this was 1950.  Steam and the Lucky Strike stack in the background, nice.

That first image with the Lucky Strike smokestack and the signals really ties the past with the present.
