Jamaica NY LIRR Action
Author: erielackawanna

Before I ever went to Jamaica I remember seeing Alan King make the joke, "My wife kept nagging me, 'take me to Jamaica, I want to go to Jamaica, take me to Jamaica,' so I took her to Jamaica. Now she wants a divorce."

A week ago Friday (Feb 3) I spent a bit of time at the Jamaica station.

Image one is what I assume to be a rescue engine, an old LIRR MP15AC sitting out in the yard.

Image two is of an M3 and and M7 set both leaving at the same time.

Image three is another M7 set heading east.

Image four is a DE30AC ready to pull a train to Oyster Bay.

Image five is the Long Island Railroad combined station and HQ building.

It was HQ.  Now it serves some lesser function.  The main HQ building is on the south side of the tracks, next to the JFK Air Train terminal.

Picture 1 illustrates spectacular engineering and the use of a very long lens.  Picture 2 looks like the same shot but with lens retracted, both though are scenes only seen in the East.

You are correct - one was at about 300mm and the other probably about 60 or 70mm (although different lenses).

My Sigma 70-300mm is not communicating with my Canon 40D anymore. Had to manually focus (which is what you have to do with that lens often anyway, so not a huge disaster, but definetely annoying).

The number of duck unders and fly overs n that tight space is amazing.  Another place with a smaller scale layout is Rahway NJ, where the trains to the Jersey Shore leave the NEC.  Lots going on with crossovers and all kinds of activity visible from the platforms.

It's a Pennsy-designed facility, completed just 100 years ago. Most of the fill was hauled in from Syosset with hopper cars, where man-made valleys were created.
There is a Arcadia Publishing book on the whole Jamaica Station topic, and shows the grade-crossing elimination project 100+ years ago.
