Former Bicentennial locomotives still in service?
Author: MC6853

Recently I was wondering which Bicentennial units are still in service for Class 1 railroads... All I've got are CSXT #8872 (former KCS SD40 #616), KCS #2010 (ex-B&M GP38-2 #200), BNSF #1916 (ex-BN #1876), and BNSF #1571 (ex-ATSF SD45-2 #5702)...

I've done some research on this, and it's turned up some interesting results... N&W SD45 #1776, Rock Island E8 #652, and SP U25B #3100 are preserved, C&NW GP18 #1776 was traded in to EMD back in 1985, SSW SD45T-2 #9389 was wrecked on BN in the 1990s I believe, and SP GP40P-2 #3197 is on IHB now... BRC MP15 #534 I'm fairly certain is still on BRC, while Milwaukee SD40-2 #156, if my info is correct, is on Pan Guilford Southern (or whatever they're called these days)... NS test unit #1000 at Juniata is former EL SD45 #3632, but I wouldn't say that it's still "in service"... Three of Santa Fe's five SD45-2s were converted to B-units, while another was retired; only #5702 is still in service for BNSF... BN's U30C #1776 was scrapped, while BN SDP40 #1976 is apparently alive on a shortline in Texas, it appears...

Can anyone think of any more still alive these days?

The D&H RS-3u bicentennial unit went to the Wellsboro & Corning. Not a class 1, of course.

Forgot about that one; it's on WNYP these days I believe...

This unit was on the WNY&PA up in Olean Ny last I saw it, which was about 6 months or so ago. Belive it is in fresh WNYP Paint to boot.. Thought the Wellsboro and Corning was part of the B&P/GW Empire.   Ben

I thought the RS3U unit along with the S2 was sold to the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville?

I believe the Tioga Central/W&C scrapped all the other alco's on their roster, all RS1's

Is the former Erie Lackawanna SDP45 bicentennial unit among those rebuilt for use on NS?

??? NS has ex-EL SD45-2's, not SDP's. A couple of them were rebuilt to 3000 hp for SP and ran on UP for a while.

As pointed out, the NS units are SD45-2's.  The Bicentennial SDP45 was 3638.  This was one of 19 financed/owned by the N&W.  One was wrecked in the Delaware Water Gap in September of 1975 and was returned to the N&W and was rebuilt as a slug.  The other 18 were returned to the N&W in late 1984 and were put into service for a while in CR blue (or in one case, EL maroon/yellow/grey) and then all but one were traded in to EMD on SD60's in 1986.  The survivor is EL3639 (one number above the Bicentennial and is in Roanoke and owned by the museum).

The SP rebuilds were from the second order for 15.  These where not financed by the N&W (and did not have dual controls).  All 15 did get pickup up by VMV and were leased to the SP as SDP45's in blue for a number of years before they started to scatter.  MK picked up a number of the units form this group and 6 were rebuilt as part of the 1994 133 unit SD40-2 order.

I believe the former DT&I Bicentennial locomotive  is still in service with CN under it's GTW era number of 6228.

Indianapolis Union (IURY) SW-1500 # 23 was painted into a Bicentennial scheme, the unit became IURY #200, later Conrail #9601.

Current status shows that is W&LE #1501, in service.

When I moved to Indianapolis in 1985, almost all of the IURY SW-1500's were assigned to the Indy Terminal, along with GP15-1's
#1600-1616. Former #23 was part of the local sea of Blue, which I didn't know til later...

Amazingly, all of Canadian National's American subsidiary Bicentennial engines survive today.

GTW's #1776, was originally GP38AC #5808. It worked for both CV and GTW under both reporting marks. In fact, it was still running around in GTW colors but with the CV noodle well into the 1990's. It was sold some time between 1996 and 2003 to LLPX and is now their #2216.

DT&I #1776, was originally GP38-2 #228 It became GTW #6228. It is still running for Canadian National today.

DTSL #76 was originally GP7 #46. It became GTW #6046 and is now working for the Georgia Central as their #6046.

Central Vermont #1776, a GP9, was originally Grand Trunk Lines East #4450. It was transferred to CV in the mid 1960's with the same number. This was also the famous locomotive that recieved CV's green and yellow but got a GT noodle. As of 2001 it was working for the St. Lawrence & Atlantic as their #68, which ironically is the sucessor to the Grand Trunk Lines East.

Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific #3605, an RS11, traveled back and forth between the DWP and the CV until it was sold to the Winchester & Western in the 1980's. It first worked as their #3605 and is now their #605.

As for the other railroads that have been merged into Canadian National, they all survive too.

B&LE #853, an SD18, is now owned by the South Branch Valley Railroad, aka the Patomac Eagle Route, as their #182.

EJ&E #668, an SD38-2, is still working for Canadian National.

Illinois Central Gulf had two #1776's. The first one, GP38AC #9510, was involved in a wreck and damaged badly. It was rebuilt and repainted into normal colors. It was sold to New England Central as their #9510. It was then switched to the Indiana Southern as their #3814. It was then sold to the Otter Tail Valley Railroad in 2013 as their #3814. The second unit, GP38-2 #9606, repainted to replace #9510, ran with the name "Sim Webb" for a time after it was repainted back to normal colors. It is still working for Canadian National today.
