Chasing NS 14R along D&H South line - 2/16/17
Author: JPB

Thursday 2/16/17 was largely cloudy and blustery with frequent snow showers in the area northeast of Binghamton, NY along the ex-D&H Albany & Susquehanna line. NS train 14R (Enola-E Deerfield with likely some CP-PAR interchange traffic to be picked up at Mohawk Yard) had just departed Binghamton after finishing its yard work when I arrived on the scene at Sanitaria Springs where 14R is crossing Hancock Rd as it slogs up the hill to Belden tunnel with 14,000+ HP comprised of SD70ACe, ES44DC, and 2 SD40-2 GATX engines leased to Pan Am. In the midst of a mini snow squall, 14R coasts downgrade after passing through the tunnel and rounds the bend approaching Pratt Rd. Photo #3 is a better shot of the two, 43 year old SD40-2s built by GMD for the QNS&L RR.

14R paused for 30 minutes or so at CP-487, the north end of Afton siding, to meet the Chicago-bound 23K double stack train, which originates at Ayer, MA, but is "toupeed" with EMP/JBHU/other domestic containers at Mechanicville. At 4:15pm or so, 14R is on the move as it splits two old naked GRS signal stands among the drooping out of service code lines at Bainbridge. A pair of Grainbelt Corp gondolas, perhaps loaded with steel for P&W interchange at Gardner, bring up the rear of the healthy sized train.
