An Afternoon in South Bend
Author: z-trains

I was left with a dilemma on Sunday; I forgot my video camera's charger at home before I left California and that meant that I had a limited charge to go out yesterday after my outing last week into Northwestern Ohio. With not much range to work with I decided to head down to South Bend, Indiana, for the afternoon. Without further ado, here are the photos!
  • Shortly after I arrived at Arnold St., an eastbound NS manifest with a UP ES44AC and a CP ES44AC passes through the junction.
  • A little while later, a short eastbound doublestack train lead by a single DASH 9-44CW in Heritage II paint tears under the signal bridge east of junction with the CN South Bend subdivision, as a westbound CN stack train heads onto the NS line.
  • Back at Arnold St., a westbound NS manifest with a home road leader (the first one of the day) and a ecclectic lashup of toasters.

  • A few minutes later, another westbound CN train, this time with a BCOL C40-8M second out, passes through the interlocking plant
  • And right afterwards, a BNSF-powered coal drag runs through Arnold St.
  • Another coal drag, this time with NS power, passes by with the South Bend Union Station looming in the background.

  • Another NS westbound, this time an intermodal train, passes by Arnold St.
  • With the abandoned and iconic factory looming behind it, a westbound manifest heads for Chicago behind a pair of NS GE's
  • A few minutes later, an eastbound BNSF-powered coal train passes, with a Heritage II SD70MAC second out.

  • As an eastbound approaches behind me, a westbound power move with a battered SD70 on the point passes by.
  • The eastbound, behind another pair of Heritage II C44-9W's, then heads through Arnold St.
  • Yet another eastbound behind BNSF power, this time an AC4400CW.

  • Finally, my train of the day passes with two SD80MAC's and a DASH 9-44CW.
Have a great week!

Great bunch, good old Arnold Street, great place in the good old days. Brave soul if you were there alone.

The exNYC catilever is located just west of the first crossing on the east side of downtown.

Is that impressive office building in the background the former Studebaker HQ?

Was going to say if in South Bend Indiana, one really should include
a Studebaker automobile of some description.
Ditto a South Shore electric train as well...

I saw a South Shore train on my way back to Grand Rapids but I didn't stop to film it, as the clouds had really rolled in at that point and it was going the wrong direction.

Nice catches and photos.    Tried to railfan south bend about 20 years back at the junction area.   A guy said it was easy to get to......however the surrounding area was very bad at the time.
