Where Are The NS C40-8.5 / Dash 8.5's? + Photo
Author: cornerfieldhobby

I was curious to know but where are the NS C40-8.5's running around at. There are only 12 of them. #8500 - 8511. I got #8509 by pure luck on NS 310 in Unionville Ohio back on Sunday March 20th, 2016 as seen in the photo. The reason I ask about these units, is because I have not seen any of these units yet since 8509 which wasn't even completely painted yet and would like to see one of these units even if it's trailing sometime.

Most of them have been placed in storage.  I'm guessing in Roanoke.....

Only three are in active service.

I saw two in a week and missed a third by minutes back at the end of October and November.

NS 8510, still smelling like fresh paint leads NS E25 south out of Fuquay Varina NC in the mist on 11.4.16.

E25 at Kipling NC, riding the old NS roller coaster.

E25 again at Lillington, NC.

E25 contining south at Bunn Level.

8510 might be uglier than sin, but at least it has an awesome P5.

Talking to the crew, all they had it say about it was, "at least it's newly rebuilt".

5 days earlier NS 8508 trails on NS 134 into Linwood yard on 10.30.16.

Most of them are huddled around the turntable at the East End Shops in Roanoke since they won't stay running without crapping out.  You can polish a turd all you want, but it's still a turd.

Thanks for everyone who all replied. So there are only 3 in active service. Kind of a waste in my opinion for a rebuild as the new AC44C6M's are doing great outside of very few having engine trouble. As for the 8509, on my youtube video I have of him passing just east of Perry, the conductor replied to my video stating - "I was the conductor when this set of power came back on the 309 the next day and the 8509 was the leader. The heaters did not work and the dynamic was hit or miss. My engineer said it best when he said he could hear the sanford and son Theme playing as we went down the rails lol"

Seems like there really shouldn't be any issues as they aren't something completely "new" as far as the general idea goes. Anyone know exactly what the big problems are with these rebuilds? Would explain why there aren't that many, makes sense to figure the bugs out before building a bunch or deciding against the project if they cannot be made reliable.

3rd party (non-GE) fuel injection & electrical gremlins.  Dynamic brake issues & fuel rail leaks are common.  Sad those shops turned out world class steam locomotives, but now have continual trouble with these dash 8.5 turds, the few that are running.
