NS New Grade Separated Underpass Update 3/20/17
Author: NSSpike

New Grade Separated Underpass  US78 “Bankhead Hwy.” / SR GA92 / Norfolk Southern Alabama East End District Douglasville Georgia

Stopped by this project this weekend to take in the progress made over the last four weeks on preparing the area where the Shoofly will be built. Had heard over the radio MOW personal receiving track authorities as the projects contractor was working close to the south rail installing catch basins and culvert piping. This work was done after several loads of road bed base material was trucked in and leveled. In some areas there must be at least 3ft of base material. In all, three bridges will be built over the new GA92 bypass of Douglasville. North of the NS mainline, East Strickland Street, the NS East End mainline and US 78 hi-way. Took time to photo both the north and south approaches of the new hi-way to the bridge area. Plenty of rock to deal with on this project.

#1 A re-routed Memphis to Atlanta JB Hunt stack train NS 264 heads east through the construction site on it's way to Austell where a G94 ends up pulling a cut of cars back to the north to Whitaker Yard. As a rule this train comes from the north out of Chattanooga directly into Whitaker Yard.

#2 View looking north toward the bridge construction area on the new GA92 bypass.

#3 View looking south toward the bridge construction area on the new GA92 bypass.
