Great Smokey Mountains Railway has painted their fromer Santa Fe GP30 that has been running around in blue and yellow since they aquirred it.  It made it's first run on Friday (Mar 24) from Bryson City to Dillsboro (NC) and return.  The weather was kinda crappy but she looks very nice!  The GSMR crew did a very nice job on her.

Photo 1 - Coming around the curve into Dillsboro after passing the GSMR shops passing the tender of Southern 722 which is in the shop.

Photo 2 - After arriving in Dillsboro the power cut off and was running around the train to make the run back to Bryson City after about an hour and a half layover so the passengers can visit the shops in Dillsboro.  It was the sole power today so they ran LHF back to Bryson City.

Does anyone know the history of that open car behind the locomotive?  Is this the car that operated with the Chessie Steam Safety Express Train?

It is the car from the Chessie Safety Express, a kitbash of a former "Phoebe Snow"  coach; the car was built as DL&W 311 renumbered by EL 1311.

​Thank you so much Art House.  I thought that it might be that car as the car was one of the ex-Long Island Cars (Phoebe Snow coach) that RRP purchased that had some fire damage and they sold it to the Chessie System who in turn took it down to Huntington, W.V. and converted it into the open car as you see it.  For a time it was used at the B&O R.R. Museum in Baltimore and then it just disappeared from the area.  I'm glad to know that it still exists.

Whew, decent colors but what a tasteless design.

Looks nice, definitely better than the blue, red, and yellow.

Thank you for Image of the Day!  It was a crappy day weather wise but I was there and it was the first run since being painted, so I tried to make the best of it.  With spring here there will be some nice opportunities to get some more shots with some spring color.
